Where Is The Mystery Picture?????
Rotarian Magazine

A world through rose-colored glasses

The Rotarian -- July 2010
by Diana Schoberg
The Pingelapese call the disorder maskun – “not-see.” People with achromatopsia see in black and white with about 20/200 vision, which by U.S. standards would make them legally blind. Their pupils jerk around, a condition called nystagmus. And, most disabling of all, they are hypersensitive to light – literally blinded by the light. “It’s easy to tell an achromat when you see one,” says Bob McClenathan, an optometrist and member of the Rotary Club of Lancaster, Pa., who has helped patients with the rare genetic disorder during two missions to Pingelap, Micronesia.

NEWS

Ready or not, we had assigned seating today. For the few who hate to change their seat, we were told that in times past, you could pay a yearly seat
rental fee. Pres. Barb, perhaps this could be an “Almost Fine Free” card option? Remember, this is so we “mingle with other members

Cindy E. thanked everyone who signed up items for the Silent Auction. She asked that we specify what and let her know the dollar amount. If you can’t donate, please find someone who can. High dollar items are needed…Thanks to Earl Corin for donating 2 condo weeks again this year. You are the best! Pres. Barb presented 2 Southwest tickets to anywhere the fly-a most popular auction item! All items can be dropped off at Eklund Insurance on Lincoln Way

Speech Contest

Pres. Barb told us the theme of the speech contest next year will be “The Power of One.” It takes 1 Rotarian and 1 idea to make a difference.

NO RAFFLE WINNER THIS WEEK
for the $428.00 prize

Community BBQ
September 24/2010

Today we received our BBQ tickets. We also got a bill for $250 which means we can pay for them, and give them away to family, friends, or clients. Or, we can sell them to the same people. Pres. Barb had our best ticket sellers tell how it’s done-Don Y, & Virgil T. Paul R wanted a 3 day head start before Bill J. started stealing his regular ticket buyers…there WILL BE competition so get started selling those tickets NOW. You need to sell to 4 couples…Kids tickets are 3/1 in the count (cause they’re cheaper)…Larry R. had BBQ posters for window display…He also needs someone to take on the sponsorship chair…Thanks again to Jeff A. and Audrey B. for agreeing to chair the BBQ!

Program for 7/27/2010
Laura Wayman,
Program Manager
for Seniors First
Laura presented information about all the services available in Placer County. She is a published author of “Dementia Whisperer,” a book that helps caregivers communicate with dementia patients. She did ask us how many wanted to grow old or stay young. Sometimes it’s our choice!?! The basic program is designed to help people access the programs that will best serve their needs to stay in their homes whenever possible. From providing meals in a café social setting, transportation to hospital, dr. appointments or necessary shopping, home safety repairs, to housing and care options.
